Author's comments
This book is about not falling prey to a negative self-concept after trauma. It is about redefining how you see yourself, how to take your personal challenge, and learn the valuable embedded lesson it may offer. I evolved as a person because I was made aware that I could be a better me after being stripped of my limited ideas of myself. I was given an opportunity to renew and rebrand myself - to live from a deeper and evolving image of who I am.
Come to grips with vulnerability. The past, the present, and the future - these are all things I had a lot of time to think about when I was in the hospital. It took me a few weeks until what was happening to me started to sink in. There was so much activity surrounding me in the hospital that I got caught up in being a patient, rather than being myself. I slowly started to understand that I was a quadriplegic.
Self-preservation. Coming to terms with your disability means losing your innocence. It is a rite of passage and an initiation into a new and higher level of awareness and sensitivity. While in the initiation process, the moment-to-moment unfolding of events requires one to rely on one's self, measure the situation carefully, get information, and safely guide the self through obstacles as they present themselves.

Congratulations to Ed Penniman!
I have had the pleasure of knowing this incredible man for decades. I was also lucky enough to have worked with him, with all his wacky, artful, delightful creativity, PRIOR to his being stricken with GBS. That means that I have also personally witnessed this amazing journey he so beautifully writes about in You Are Up to You. I witnessed the arduous, tedious, soul-searching process that Ed went through in the creation of this inspirational book. It was amazing for me to see, firsthand, Ed’s utterly delightful, off-the-wall sense of humor be a strong, continual undercurrent that runs deep throughout every facet of his life – before, during and after.
In addition to its unique, creative, entertaining artwork, You Are Up to You is a deep, thought-provoking, insightful guide, and offers rich, positive advice and spiritual encouragement to anyone who has gone through trauma and disability... truly, a MUST READ for all those who have personally experienced trauma or disability in their lives, as well as for all those who care for them.
Each of us have trials and while some may seem less dramatic than others, Ed helps us understand that what happens to us is not as important as what we learn from it. How will we move forward and bless the lives of others by what we have learned? Ed so clearly identifies the feelings of confusion, loss, fear, anger and denial, rebirth, and finally the path of coming to terms with and learning to love "what is". His story is enlightening, inspiring, and deeply contemplative. His trial and suffering have been transformed into a gift to each of us, for which I am very grateful.
I listened to this book while going through tough times. This book contains a nice combination of Ed's personal story, the stories of others, and his insights on healing and growth.
I'd known of his design work from the corporate identity publications of the 70s and early 80s, and am lucky enough to have one of his watercolors in my home but never knew his story. I appreciated the watercolor even more now.
He has a lot of exposure to various spiritual philosophies and shares what worked from those for him. The book is a highlight reel on what worked for him spiritually with great stories mixed in.
While I'm not physically disabled, my sports injuries and other loss allow me to relate to Ed's journey and take a look from it.
The audio book was well read and at 1.25 speed is a great cadence.
I highly recommend it.
I did not know him before, but I know him now, and I can say with no reservations, Ed Penniman is a beautiful human being.
At age 42, he was at the top of his game, with a respected and well-rewarded career, a loving wife, his eye on a Porsche to replace his BMW, and Italian suits and shoes.
He woke up one morning desperately sick. The ER docs couldn’t come up with a diagnosis. But it was clear that he was slipping into total paralysis…and likely death. A hospital priest administered Last Rites.
Obviously he didn’t die, or you wouldn’t be reading this book. But he had lost control of EVERYTHING except his attitude toward the situation in which he found himself. That’s where his growth and recovery began.
What follows here is a searing tale of one man’s unflinching honesty in the face of crushing defeat, and his search for the way forward to the new person he eventually became.
What he learned along the way he offers to the reader. So, fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a very bumpy ride, but one well worth the taking.
What a rare opportunity! As Ed's brother I got an opportunity to see why Ed has such a well adjusted outlook on life given the challenges he faces. I have admired how he is able to be a worldwide traveler to paint. Truly an inspiring and well written book! A great read!
This book is about loss, reorientation, and recovery. Ed teaches others facing monumental issues in their lives to be "...bigger than (their) challenge..." and paces them through his experiences in ways that I found truly inspirational. He clearly tells his story in a way that makes a strong case for choosing carefully your attitude in ways that will determine a positive outcome. These learnings can actually be applied to almost any challenge we may face.
I have a client right now who is facing similar monumental obstacles. I've encouraged him to throw away the rearview mirror, read Ed's book and take on the deep work it will require to regain his life. I truly believe Ed's story can be life changing for those willing to internalize, understand and seriously consider learning from his experience. You really are up to you! Thank you, Ed, for sharing your story. I believe you will be a positive life changer for all who read and are willing to 'hear' your story.
