"With two very likeable leads and well-crafted, steamy love scenes Fastball is a solid read. There are no annoying, manufactured personality clashes between the protagonists, and this makes for a refreshing change. Sometimes having genuinely nice characters works, as it does here." --InD'Tale Magazine
"I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It was great and I really hope to read more of this writing couple in the near future." --Natasja's Book Blog on Hardball
Fastball A Prequel to The Philadelphia Patriots edition by VK Sykes Literature Fiction eBooks
Overall, this is a good book. It is built around a sport I know little about, but the book is only minimally about baseball. It is primarily a "relationship" book. The main characters are drawn to each other, but resisting the pull. This is a very standard plot for a romance. The glory of the genre is that the character development, and plot twists, can take center stage instead.
This author develops very strong female characters. The primary female character is successful, ethical, faithful to her family, but a bit on the naive side. Secondary females are scarce, but they are also strong, and somewhat humorous.
The males in the book fall into three categories: strong he-men, total jerks, and guys who are slightly unpleasant, but have rules they live by. The hero and his best friend are of the he-man variety. As is often the case, they try to do things right, but being slightly he-man, kind of miss what that is.
The villains are one of the only weak points in the story, and it may be their very weakness that makes them a problem. They are, admittedly, weak individuals, but instead of building any explanation of their weakness, they were introduced as if a ton of bricks were dropped into the story. They did provide an interesting counterpoint, and allowed the hero to rescue the girl.
All in all, a nice story.

Fastball A Prequel to The Philadelphia Patriots edition by VK Sykes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Jake is finally called back up to the majors in baseball after a year of rehab after an injury and playing in the minors. His 1st day back he meets Maddie, a sports reporter for a newspaper. He talks her into an interview away from the team communications people. Maddie refuses to date Jake because of the real chance of loosing her job. Jake and Maddie are both called on the carpet by the team when her in depth interview is published. Can Jake and Maddie have a relationship without jeopardizing their careers and dreams?
This was a good book. I will admit that I did have a hard time reading it at parts. It seemed to drag for me making it harder for me to get into the story fully. I figured you would want my honest opinion.
This was the story of Jake and Maddie. Jake is a baseball player with the Patriots and Maddie is a reporter. Maddie tells Jake that she wants to do a real interview with him. He agrees as long as she agrees to make it a private one. During the interview they realize they have a connection together. Maddie and Jake get into trouble for not following procedure for doing the interviews. They are told to stay away from each other or else. Jake finds ways to be around Maddie to see if there was really something there. Read the book and find out if he hit's a homerun or strikeout.
If you're a sports fan, I recommend this story. I really liked both main characters. I thought, before reading it, that the plot would be one of them chasing the other. It was a pleasant surprise that they were equally attracted to each other from the beginning, and the conflict came from the two of them fighting the system. I appreciated that the heroine was a competent professional in a male-dominated profession.
Fastball was a really interesting read. I thought it was okay. It wasn't something that I would want to read more than once, but it did have a nice story line.
It has lots of baseball, romance, and drama to keep you occupied. And most of the character's were very interesting, and I enjoyed them greatly.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was Maddie. I liked her at certain points but other wise I thought she was a complete idiot. I mean really through the whole first half of the book, she doesn't know what to do about Jake, and she has to be told basically the same thing twice from two different people before she actually lets her self have a relationship with him. I thought that was just ridiculous. Then towards the end I truly hated her guts, I couldn't believe she was going to treat Jake like that. I really felt sorry for him because of the things she did, and they just led her to getting into even more trouble. She should have just listened to Jake to begin with, and not been such a "jerk" about it all.
I really loved Jake though. I enjoyed reading the book through his point of view, and I loved how he was willing to help his friends in a time of need. I also loved the fact that he knew he wanted Maddie, and he wasn't going to let anything get in the way of that. He was truly an awesome alpha male, that just went after something he wanted, and it made the book worth reading because of it. I do recommend this book, it was a fun read.
If you want to kill a couple of hours reading a book while multitasking, this might be the book for you.
On the plus side, there is nothing wrong with the writing style. On the minus side, this has got to be one of the most simplistic novels I have ever read. Don't be looking for a plot twist or character development.
This is instalove at its finest with a hiccup before rushing to the altar. Don't be incensed and pretend this is a spoiler. You knew that was going to happen. We know the destination, but it would be great to have a more interesting journey getting there. Bottom line, they met, broke the rules related to their respective careers and got it on. The steamy scenes were short but good.
The climax, such as it is, is ludicrous given that the two guys involved are baseball players, not commandos. Jake's offer to Maddie at the end is even more ridiculous.
Bottom line, this novel is trite. Romance readers are no less worthy of interesting books than those of other genres.
To those who enjoyed it, you are in luck, as I suspect there are many books just like this.
